Sociologists from the University of Innsbruck recently invited visitors at a university open day to step into the everyday reality of long‑term care. Cards were spread across the floor — each one representing a daily task: cooking, medication, body care, shopping. Families, students, and care professionals were asked to choose a task and place it: who would take care of this if grandma could no longer manage on her own?
There were no right or wrong answers. Only different lived experiences.
Then came the follow‑up question: and what if grandma lived in Denmark instead?
That moment of surprise, of recognising how deeply context shapes care, is at the heart of the LeTs‑Care project. Long‑term care is organised in profoundly different ways across Europe, and understanding those differences is the first step toward designing better, fairer systems.
